Fantasy on Syrinx for solo flute
Peter Bacchus: Fantasy on Syrinx for solo flute was written in 1993 as a modern "gloss" or deconstruction of Claude Debussy’s foundational solo work, Syrinx (1913). The composition is dedicated to Samuel Baron, the legendary American flautist and teacher who was Bacchus's primary mentor at the Manhattan School of Music.
1993 marked the 80th anniversary of the composition of Debussy's Syrinx. This milestone prompted many composer-flautists in the New York circle, including Bacchus, to revisit the work’s structural "mythology." Bacchus sought to explore the "shadows" of the original piece—taking Debussy's B-flat minor tonality and stretching it into post-tonal territory. In 1993, Samuel Baron was a titan of the Bach Aria Group and a revered pedagogue. Bacchus wrote this Fantasy as a tribute to Baron's "analytical" way of playing; Baron often taught Syrinx by breaking down its chromatic "cells." Bacchus's composition is essentially a musical realization of those teaching sessions.
At the same time, Bacchus was deeply integrated into the New York contemporary music scene, performing with various avant-garde ensembles. During this year, he was refining his ability to combine French Impressionist phrasing with extended techniques, such as multiphonics and microtonal shading.
The piece is characterized by "ghostly" textures. Bacchus uses the original's familiar melodies as "anchors," but surrounds them with multiphonic sonorities that suggest the "unspoken" or "mythological" resonance of Pan's pipes. The performer must move seamlessly between the "pure" Debussy sound and the "distorted" contemporary sounds Bacchus introduces.
Peter Bacchus (1954) is an American composer and flutist recognized for his unique synthesis of contemporary avant-garde techniques and historical performance practice.
He earned his formal degrees from the Manhattan School of Music, where he was immersed in the "New York School" of composition and performance. His education was marked by a dual focus: mastering the technical rigors of modernist flute playing while developing a sophisticated compositional voice under the influence of the city's leading theorists. A defining aspect of his artistic upbringing was his close relationship with Samuel Baron, the legendary flutist of the Bach Aria Group. Baron’s analytical approach to the works of J.S. Bach provided Bacchus with the structural foundation that later informed his Baroque-inspired contemporary works. Bacchus served as a longtime member and associate of the Bach Aria Group, where he honed his skills in historical "metaphrase". His style is characterized by structural clarity and a rejection of purely "effect-driven" avant-garde writing. He uses extended techniques (such as multiphonics and microtonal shading) not as gimmicks, but as harmonic intensifiers of traditional forms.
