Concerto for flute and orchestra in E minor

Concerto for flute and orchestra in E minor

By Benda Franz

F. Benda: Concerto in E minor for flute, strings and continuo was composed for his employer, the Crown Prince Frederik of Prussia who later became the King of Prussia and was masterful flutist, pupil of Johann Joachim Quantz.

The concerto follows the typical three-movement structure of a classical concerto and reflects the musical style of the Classical era, with its emphasis on clarity, balance, and elegance.
The concerto is written for flute soloist accompanied by a string orchestra and continuo. The continuo part may be performed by a harpsichord, organ, or cello, providing harmonic support and bassline.

Benda Franz

Franz Benda (1709-1786) was a Bohemian (Czech: František Benda) violinist and composer. Born in a musical family he started his musical journey as a chorister in Prague and later in Dresden. When he turned 18 he moved to Vienna to study violin with J.G. Graun. Two years later he received a chapel master position in Warsaw and after few years he entered the service of crown prince of Prussia who later become Frederik the Great, the King of Prussia.
There he spent all his career, throughout 40 years composing 17 symphonies, 28 violin concertos and more than 300 sonatas for various instruments. Besides composing and teaching violin Benda wrote detailed autobiography, greatly contributing to understanding of musician's life at that time.
