Franz Danzi (1763-1826) was a German cellist, conductor and composer. Born in a family of Italian musicians, he initially studied cello with his father, Innocenz Danzi and composition with G.J.Vogler in Mannheim where he joined the Palatinate court orchestra in Mannheim. His father, principal cellist of the orchestra, was praised by Mozart for his playing at the premiere of Idomeneo. in 1784 Franz took his father's position in the orchestra. Six years later he married Maria Margarethe Marchand, the singer and composer, with whom he extensively toured to Leipzig, Prague, Venice, and Florence as part of opera troupe.
In 1798 Franz Danzi became an assistant Kapellmeister in Munich but moved to Stuttgart nine years later to take over Kapellmeister position in Stuttgart, at the court of the new king of Württemberg, Frederick I. Five years later he moved to Karlsruhe, at the Royal Konservatorium.
Danzi was a mentor for the young Carl Maria von Weber, whose music he respected and promoted. His compositional style marked transition from the late Classical to the early Romantic. Nowadays he is mostly known for his woodwind quintets, even though he has composed considerable number of instrumental concertos, including 4 concertos for Flute.
