Lookout for flute solo

By Dick Robert

Robert Dick: "Lookout" for solo flute was written in 1989 by commission of the National Flute Association to be used in the High School Flute Soloist Competition.
Inspired by rock music of the 1960s and 1970s, "Lookout" is a tonal, rock composition with multiphonics and requires the flutist to sing as well. It represents a significant shift in his compositional output toward integrating American popular music and rock aesthetics into the flute's contemporary repertoire.
By the late 1980s, Dick began moving away from his earlier, purely "avant-garde" focus (like the experimentalism of Afterlight) toward a style he describes as "tonal, melodic rock". During this year, Dick was living in New York City and had recently (1986) transitioned from a "concert soloist for contemporary music" to performing exclusively his own original works and collaborative improvisations.
When writing Lookout, Dick aimed to create a piece that would "thrill" a high school student. He chose rock music as the stylistic vehicle, intending to set modern techniques, like multiphonics and singing while playing, into a musical language that was already "in the air" for young musicians.

Dick Robert

Robert Dick (1950) is an American flutist, composer and teacher who is known for mixing various styles: classical, jazz, electronic, and world music. He is known as inventor of the "glissando headjoint" that allows to achieve whammy bar effects used by electric guitar players. The idea came during his research studies at I.R.C.A.M. (Institute of Research and Coordination, Acoustics and Music) in Paris.
Initially trained by Julius Baker to become an orchestra player, Robert Dick wanted to expand his boundaries of music explorations, nurturing the idea that "music is generated from hearing within and recognizing what you are hearing". Thus, Robert Dick's concert programs consists of his compositions, influenced by very different composers – from Telemann to Hindemith and Jimi Hendrix, generously supplemented with improvisations along the way. Robert Dick has published several books on contemporary techniques for flute ("The Other Flute: A performance Manual of Contemporary" etc.)
