Arca sacra for flute solo

Arca sacra for flute solo

By Folio Cynthia

Cynthia Folio: Arca sacra for flute solo was written in 1997 by commission of the National Flute Association (NFA) for its High School Soloist Competition. The title "Arca sacra" is Latin for "sacred chest" or "holy ark".
The inspiration for the title and the music itself comes from Hildegard von Bingen (1098–1179), a remarkable German Benedictine abbess, writer, composer, philosopher, mystic, and visionary. Folio is known for incorporating aspects of women's history into her work. The work is deeply inspired by Hildegard's plainchants. Folio uses a modern, post-tonal language but incorporates elements that evoke the ancient, soaring melodies and spiritual intensity of Hildegard's music. The piece explores extended techniques and a wide range of dynamics and tone colors, pushing the boundaries of the solo flute.

Folio Cynthia

Cynthia Folio (1954) is a distinguished American composer, music theorist, and flutist known for her diverse and eclectic musical output that spans classical, jazz, and experimental genres.
She studied flute with Bonita Boyd and composition with Joseph Schwantner at the Eastman School of Music.
Folio's compositions are known for their varied nature, combining "pungent tonality and high rhythmic energy" with lyrical and expressive qualities. Her works often draw inspiration from historical female figures, as seen in pieces like Arca sacra (inspired by Hildegard von Bingen) and When the Spirit Catches You... (exploring epilepsy awareness).
A versatile flutist herself, much of her compositional output includes works for the flute, from solo pieces to large ensembles, and even a jazz flute CD titled Portfolio, which features her original jazz compositions. Her works have been recorded on various labels, including Centaur Records and Albany Records.
In addition to composing, she is the author of several influential music theory articles and book chapters focused on contemporary music and jazz analysis.
Currently, she is a Professor and Chair of Music Studies at Temple University's Boyer College of Music and Dance.
