Mr. Dick is Thinking in Terms of a Blues-Pattern
Gergely Ittzés: "Mr. Dick is Thinking in Terms of a Blues-Pattern" for flute solo was written in 1987. It is of Ittzés' early compositions, written when he was approximately 18 years old. The work is a tribute to Robert Dick, a pioneer of contemporary flute music. The title playfully references Dick's name and his famous exploration of extended techniques.
The main motive is explicitly derived from Robert Dick's "Flying Lesson No. 5," specifically adopting the multiphonic patterns found in that work and elaborating on them freely. The composition is a 6-minute set of variations that mimics a jazz-like improvisation within a written-out score.
In 1987, Gergely Ittzés was entering a transformative period as a young performer-composer in Hungary. He was deeply immersed in the study of extended techniques, which were becoming more accessible thanks to Robert Dick’s publications. The year marked his growing interest in the intersection of improvisatory jazz styles and rigorous classical modernism. This piece serves as a record of that synthesis, applying a "blues" framework to complex contemporary sounds.

Mr. Dick is Thinking in Terms of a Blues-Pattern
Gergely Ittzés (1969) is an internationally recognized Hungarian flautist, composer, and pedagogue.
Born in Győr, Hungary, Ittzés was raised in a family of prominent musicians. His father, Mihály Ittzés, was a renowned musicologist and the long-time deputy director of the Kodály Institute, which provided Gergely with a deep grounding in the Kodály method and Hungarian music history.
His most significant early training came from István Matuz, the legendary pioneer of the "Hungarian Flute School." Under Matuz, Ittzés mastered circular breathing, multiphonics, and microtonality, which became the bedrock of his creative voice. He graduated from the Franz Liszt Academy of Music in Budapest and later pursued advanced studies at the Prague Conservatory and the Banff Centre for the Arts in Canada. He earned his Doctor of Liberal Arts (DLA) from the Liszt Academy, focusing his research on multiphonic systems.
Ittzés is a founding member of the TeTraVERSI Flute Quartet and has performed as a soloist with major European orchestras. He is the creator of Flute Force, a multi-volume pedagogical system and software designed to help flautists navigate contemporary fingerings and acoustics. This work is a primary source for doctoral research into modern flute acoustics. Ittzés served as a professor at the University of Győr for many years before joining the faculty of the Tianjin Juilliard School in China.
His original works, such as Totem (2012) and Mr. Dick is Dreaming, are characterized by polyphonic solo writing, where a single flute produces multiple independent lines.
