La flûte de Pan for flute and piano in F Major (Op 15)

La flûte de Pan for flute and piano in F Major (Op 15)

By Mouquet Jules

J. Mouquet: La flûte de Pan (Pan's flute) for flute and piano (Op 15) was written in 1904 and dedicated to Léopold Lafleurance, notable French flutist. The Pan is the god of wild and shepherds in Greek mythology who plays Pan's flute, the instrument named after the Syrinx, the water nymph pursued by Pan. Trying to escape amorous advances, Syrinx takes refuge in river where river nymphs turn her into hollow water reeds. Having lost his desired nymph, Pan decides to cut the reeds and make pan pipes to express his sadness.
Nine years later Claude Debussy wrote a solo piece for flute La flûte de Pan (in 1913) which shortly after was renamed to Syrinx to avoid the confusion.

Mouquet Jules

Jules Mouquet (1867-1946) was a French composer of late Romantic era with influence of Impressionism. Born in Paris, he studied composition and harmony at the Paris Conservatoire. After winning three prestigious prizes for his compositions, he was appointed professor of harmony at the Paris Conservatoire in 1913 where he wrote a Cours complémentaire d'harmonie (Complementary course in harmony).
Even though Mouquet won several prestigious composition prizes (Prix de Rome; Prix Trémont etc.), The La flûte de Pan for flute and piano and its version for flute and orchestra is the most known composition of Mouquet.
