Concerto for Flute and Wind Orchestra
Mike Mower: Concerto for Flute and Wind Orchestra was written in 2004. The concerto was written for and dedicated to the world-renowned flutist James Galway. It was premiered in 2004 at the International Convention Centre in Birmingham, UK, by James Galway and the Royal Air Force Central Band.
The Concerto follows a traditional three-movement format:
1. Bright: High-energy funk and jazz-rock.
2. Espressivo: A lush, cinematic "jazz ballad" style.
3. Medium Swing: A technical tour de force featuring Latin-jazz rhythms (Salsa/Bossa).
By 2004, James Galway was actively seeking high-quality "crossover" repertoire to showcase his interest in jazz and popular styles. Mower, a jazz saxophonist and flutist himself, became Galway's primary "translator" for these genres. This was the first time Mower approached the Wind Orchestra (Symphonic Band) medium on such a large scale for a concerto. He aimed to move away from the "polite" classical woodwind sound toward a powerful, brass-heavy "Big Band" aesthetic.
Around that time, Mower was refining his use of extended techniques (e.g., beatboxing and complex syncopation) within a formal concerto structure. This work challenged the traditional boundaries of what an orchestral wind section could do rhythmically.

Mike Mower (1958) is a highly versatile and internationally renowned British composer, flautist, saxophonist, and clarinetist, known for his unique ability to bridge the gap between classical and jazz music.
Born in Bath, UK, Mower originally studied classical flute at the prestigious Royal Academy of Music in London. After his formal training, he diversified his skills to include saxophone and clarinet, immersing himself in a wide range of musical styles from jazz and rock to classical ensembles and West End shows.
Mower's career is defined by his dual roles as a performer and composer. He is the founder and leader of the acclaimed jazz saxophone quartet, "Itchy Fingers", which has performed in over 40 countries and won numerous international awards.
Mower is a prolific and self-taught composer whose works are celebrated for being challenging yet tuneful, integrating complex rhythms and wide leaps with accessible melodic material. His music is published globally and frequently appears on music examination syllabi. He has received commissions from a wide range of ensembles, including the BBC Big Band, the NDR Radio Big Band, and various wind ensembles.
Mike has produced two albums for James Galway using his compositions and arrangements: “Unbreak My Heart” and “Tango Del Fuego”.
