"Doodle and Flight" for flute and piano

By Mower Mike

Mike Mower: "Doodle and Flight" for flute and piano was written in 1993. The piece shows Mower’s desire to bridge his jazz background with the classical training he received at the Royal Academy of Music.
The work is a two-movement suite:
1. Doodle: A slow, "bluesy" and lyrical introduction.
2. Flight: An energetic and virtuosic Latin-jazz movement.
Mower notes that "Doodle and Flight" can be combined with his other work, Triligence, to form a full three-movement sonata.
At the time of composition, Mike Mower was predominantly known as a jazz saxophonist and the leader of the world-renowned saxophone quartet, Itchy Fingers. During this period, Mower was shifting from being a "gigging" performer toward becoming a sought-after composer for classical flutists who wanted to explore jazz idioms without the barrier of improvisational training.

Mower's career is defined by his dual roles as a performer and composer. He is the founder and leader of the acclaimed jazz saxophone quartet, "Itchy Fingers", which has performed in over 40 countries and won numerous international awards.
Mower is a prolific and self-taught composer whose works are celebrated for being challenging yet tuneful, integrating complex rhythms and wide leaps with accessible melodic material. His music is published globally and frequently appears on music examination syllabi. He has received commissions from a wide range of ensembles, including the BBC Big Band, the NDR Radio Big Band, and various wind ensembles.
Mike has produced two albums for James Galway using his compositions and arrangements: “Unbreak My Heart” and “Tango Del Fuego”.
