Take My Breath Away for flute and piano
Tim Mulleman: Take My Breath Away for flute and piano was written in 2018. The piece was commissioned by and is dedicated to the flutist Natalia Jarząbek and the pianist Emmy Wils for the "Flute Infinity Project" album.
The world premiere of "Take My Breath Away" took place at the Teatr im. Juliusza Słowackiego in Kraków, Poland, in September 2019.
His involvement in this project highlights his engagement with contemporary instrumental performance and the exploration of specific techniques, as the album was centered around the flutist's ability to utilize permanent breathing.
Around 2018, Mulleman was actively working on several commissions for various ensembles, including "Mångata" for large ensemble and "Drei Tentos" for guitar.
Tim Mulleman (1993) is a Belgian composer, arranger, pianist, and teacher known for his versatile work across composition and arrangement, often blending classical traditions with contemporary performance techniques.
Mulleman received extensive musical training at the Royal Conservatory of Brussels, where he studied piano with Jan Michiels and composition with Annelies Van Parys and Bram Van Camp. He also studied piano in Vienna at the Universität für Musik und darstellende Kunst Wien. His research thesis, specializing in transcription and improvisation, earned him high distinction. He currently teaches at the Royal Conservatory of Brussels.
Mulleman's work is notable for its balance between original compositions for a range of ensembles and highly successful arrangements of major orchestral works by composers like Ravel, Debussy, and Saint-Saëns.
His music has been commissioned and performed by prominent groups and artists, including the Symfonieorkest Vlaanderen, the Arditti Quartet, and I Solisti. Mulleman is also an active performer, forming one half of the Pianoduo Mimese with pianist Hiu-Man Chan.
