Caminos Introspectivos for flute and piano

By Penman Katrina

Katrina Penman: Caminos Introspectivos for flute and piano was written in 2021 and dedicated to Spanish pianist Claudia Vior, Penman’s long-term chamber music collaborator.
The title translates to "Introspective Paths," and the music reflects a transition from internal isolation to external connection.
The suite consists of three miniatures reflecting the composer's personal emotional journey during a specific period of her life:
1. Santa Creu i Sant Pau (Sounds and Faith)
This movement is named after the Hospital de la Santa Creu i Sant Pau in Barcelona, where Katrina Penman was unexpectedly admitted for an operation in March 2022.
2. Petit Vals en Rondó (Joy and Freedom)
Titled "Little Waltz in Rondo form," it reflects a return to a more traditional, lighthearted musical structure. Penman wrote this movement on the day she was discharged from the hospital. It captures the immediate emotions of relief, "joy," and the renewed sense of "freedom" that comes with leaving a confined medical environment.
3. Un Viaje Nuevo (A New Journey)
The title signifies the start of a fresh chapter or path following a period of trial. It emphasizes the idea that beginning any new journey is a critical moment for self-reflection.
