Katrina Penman: Oriental for solo flute was originally drafted in 2016 and underwent a significant rewriting process that was finalized in 2021. The work is explicitly linked to the memory of Japanese composer Toru Takemitsu. Its completion in 2021 was timed to coincide with the 25th anniversary of Takemitsu's death.
The piece is inspired by traditional bamboo flutes (such as the shakuhachi). The prelude utilizes a melodic language intended to evoke these instruments, heavily influenced by the atmospheric and spatial sounds characteristic of Takemitsu.
In contrast to the Eastern-inspired opening, the variations are written in the style of an “étude de salon.” This follows the 19th-century Romantic tradition of composers like Johannes Donjon, utilizing the full technical range and "extension" of the modern Boehm flute.
Penman revisited the work during the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic. This was a period of intense creative output where she focused on themes of nature, isolation, and legacy, also completing her suite Memorias.
Katrina Penman (1982) is a British-Spanish flutist, composer, and educator whose work is defined by a synthesis of European classical precision and the rhythmic "duende" of Spanish folk traditions.
Born in London, she began her musical journey at the age of eight when she started flute lessons.
She has studied at the Royal College of Music with the renowned flutist Jaime Martín. Penman pursued advanced studies at the Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia and the Conservatorio Santa Cecilia in Rome (2006). She also spent two years at the Accademia del Teatro alla Scala in Milan under Davide Formisano.
Since 2009, Penman has been based in Spain, primarily in Valladolid. Her compositions, often written for flute and chamber ensembles, are published by Brotons & Mercadal and have received international accolades, including multiple Global Music Awards.
