Socially Distant for solo flute

By Penman Katrina

Katrina Penman: Socially Distant for solo flute was written in 2020 during the strictest period of the COVID-19 lockdown in Spain. Penman, based in Valladolid, composed the work as a response to the sudden isolation and the "new normal" of physical distancing.
The work is an étude designed to explore the psychological states of the pandemic—alternating between technical agitation (anxiety) and lyrical, hollow melodies (loneliness). It specifically utilizes extended techniques like harmonics and breath tones to simulate the feeling of a "distant" or muffled voice.
The world premiere was a virtual performance in May 2020, shared via the composer’s social media and professional networks as part of a global movement of "lockdown commissions."
The work is dedicated to "all those who felt the silence of the streets during the spring of 2020." It was later included in her award-winning album Lumina.
In 2020, with orchestral and chamber concerts canceled across Europe, Penman shifted her focus entirely to unaccompanied flute repertoire, leading to a highly prolific period of solo composition.
