Sonatina for flute and piano

By Penman Katrina

Katrina Penman: Sonatina for flute and piano was written in 2021. The work explores the intersection of nature, local legends, and the personal psychological shift occurring at the end of the global pandemic.
The musical imagery is inspired by the northern coast of Spain, specifically the landscapes and legends of regions like Galicia.
The suite's three movements follow a narrative of overcoming confinement and finding hope:
1. Daughter of the Sea (La hija del mar). Inspired by the novel "La hija del mar" of the Galician author Rosalía de Castro. It deals with themes of claustrophobic relationships within a small coastal community, utilizing the piccolo to evoke the Atlantic waves.
2. At Moonshine by the Sea (Deva): Revering the Celtic goddess Deva, divinity of the moon and waters. It depicts the moon shining over the sea after sunset.
3. After the Rain (Nunca choveu que non escampara): Based on a Galician proverb meaning "there is never a rainfall that does not give way to clear skies." This movement delivers an "unfaltering message of hope for humankind".
