Katrina Penman: To Andalusia and Beyond for flute and piano was written in 2016. The work was encouraged by flutist Wendela van Swol (based in Córdoba) and is inspired by a Scottish melody from an old book belonging to the composer's godmother's father.
The work is structured as a series of sections that transition from a solitary opening to lively Andalusian dances. It incorporates traditional Andalusian musical forms, specifically the Rumba and the Soleá.
The "Beyond" in the title refers to the integration of a Scottish melody, reflecting Penman’s own dual British-Spanish identity and her interest in Celtic music.
The piece was the direct result of a performance tour through Andalusia in 2016, which allowed her to study the region's unique musical landscape firsthand. She was actively performing with Trio Rigoletto, serving as a guest artist at the 2016 Spanish Flute Convention in Bilbao. During this time, she was based in Valladolid, beginning to develop the educational arrangements for the Orquesta Sinfónica de Castilla y León that would later define much of her professional work.
Katrina Penman (1982) is a British-Spanish flutist, composer, and educator whose work is defined by a synthesis of European classical precision and the rhythmic "duende" of Spanish folk traditions.
Born in London, she began her musical journey at the age of eight when she started flute lessons.
She has studied at the Royal College of Music with the renowned flutist Jaime Martín. Penman pursued advanced studies at the Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia and the Conservatorio Santa Cecilia in Rome (2006). She also spent two years at the Accademia del Teatro alla Scala in Milan under Davide Formisano.
Since 2009, Penman has been based in Spain, primarily in Valladolid. Her compositions, often written for flute and chamber ensembles, are published by Brotons & Mercadal and have received international accolades, including multiple Global Music Awards.
