Aria for Flute and Piano

A. Roussel: Aria for Flute and Piano was written in 1928. Originally composed as a vocalise (Vocalise No2) for voice, a melody without words, written for soprano Réginede Lormoy.
Overall Roussel wrote the Deux Vocalises without words to illustrate techniques of singing, but only the second one has been arranged for flute by Arthur Hoeree as Aria for Flute or clarinet and orchestra.

Roussel believed that "The work of a great artist should be an example and not a model... a lesson valid only by the suggestions that it awakens in an independent mind." Therefore he never copied the impressionistic ideas of Debussy or the extreme rhythms of Stravinsky, yet these styles influenced the total intellectual make-up with which Roussel composed.

Roussel Albert

Albert Roussel (1869-1937) was a French composer who started his music career rather late. Initially interested in math and serving in navy for 7 years,  he studied composition with Vincent D’Indy at the Paris Schola Cantorum where he later taught.
Even though his musical style was greatly influenced by C. Debussy and M. Ravel, his latest works are considered as rather neoclassical.
Among his most popular compositions: ballets Le festin de l'araignée, Bacchus et Ariane, and Aeneas, as well as four symphonies. Among his notable students: Erik Satie and Bohuslav Martinů who dedicated his Serenade for Chamber Orchestra to Roussel.
