Gary Schocker: Sonata No. 4 for Flute and Piano, "Summer Sonata" was written in 2003 and published in 2004 by the Theodore Presser Company. The work is dedicated to his mother for her birthday. This maintains Schocker's tradition of presenting his most melodic and approachable multi-movement works as gifts to her. It was premiered by Gary Schocker (flute) and Fumi Kuwajima (piano) in 2003. It became a centerpiece of his recital tours in the 2004–2005 season, often paired with other "seasonal" works.
The Sonata is a traditional three-movement sonata depicting a summer day:
1. Morning / Nervous (the recording title, reflecting internal mood and tempo of the movements)
2. Afternoon / Very Still
3. Evening / Spiritely
Leslie Neighbor Stroud and pianist Matthew Odell worked closely with Gary Schocker for this recording. These specific titles likely came from the composer's own performance notes or the "authoritative" insight shared during their collaboration, aiming to capture the feeling of the music rather than just the scenery.
The program notes (Centaur Records) describe the work as "unabashedly tonal and atmospheric," emphasizing how Schocker uses the piano's upper register to mimic shimmering heat and light.
2003 was a year defined by "nature and nostalgia" for Schocker. While he was writing the rhythmically intense "Ambidextranata" the same year, the Summer Sonata was his "respite." It was composed at his home in Easton, PA, and reflects the specific "Pennsylvania summer" atmosphere—from the quiet mornings to the humid, slightly agitated evenings.
By 2003, Schocker was intentionally writing sonatas that were "friendlier" to the listener than the academic avant-garde. According to doctoral surveys, this sonata is often cited as a bridge between his virtuosic 1990s style and his more impressionistic 2000s style.
In 2003, Schocker was also deep into the theater world. The Summer Sonata feels highly "scenic," with each movement acting like a set change in a play.

Gary Schocker (1959) is an American flutist, pianist, harpist, composer and teacher.
Born in Pennsylvania, he started to play flute at the age of 10 and 5 years later he debuted as a soloist with the Philadelphia Orchestra and the New York Philharmonic, becoming acclaimed performer before attending the Julliard School.
Laureate of many Young Artist competitions in the US, Gary Schocker has gained reputation as a versatile performer, able to fill in, if necessary, even Jean-Pierre Rampal when he had to perform W.A. Mozart concerto with the New Jersey Symphony Orchestra on a short notice.
Even though he regularly appears as a soloist or chamber musician throughout the world, he has proven to be a prolific composer. He has written music for almost every orchestral instrument and received multiple recognitions from the National Flute Association, winning twice the annual Newly Published Music Award.
Gary Schocker has recorded 8 CDs as a soloist with versatile repertoire and additional recordings with his recital companions Emily Mitchell (harp) and Jason Vieaux (guitar).
Gary Schocker teaches at the New York University and in his private studios in New York and Easton, Pennsylvania.
