Gary Schocker: Sonata No. 5 for Flute and Piano was written in 2004 and published in 2005 by the Theodore Presser Company. The work is dedicated to his mother for her birthday. This marks the fifth and final time in his primary sonata sequence (Nos. 1, 3, 4, and 5) that he used a birthday gift to her as the creative catalyst for a major sonata. It was premiered by Gary Schocker (flute) and Fumi Kuwajima (piano) in 2005. It became a frequent "opener" for his recitals due to its energy and compact duration.
Composed during one of Schocker's most prolific years, Sonata No. 5 is often referred to in pedagogical circles as a "mini-sonata." It represents his move toward shorter, more concentrated forms where he distills a full sonata's worth of ideas into a high-impact, six-minute span.
In 2004, Schocker was refining his "interlocking" style (also seen in "Conversations" from the same year). The piano and flute are treated as true equals, with the piano often playing melodic fragments that the flute completes. The music mirrors Schocker’s lifestyle at the time. The outer movements capture the "jittery" energy of Manhattan, while the middle movement reflects the "rural quiet" of his home in Easton, PA.

Gary Schocker (1959) is an American flutist, pianist, harpist, composer and teacher.
Born in Pennsylvania, he started to play flute at the age of 10 and 5 years later he debuted as a soloist with the Philadelphia Orchestra and the New York Philharmonic, becoming acclaimed performer before attending the Julliard School.
Laureate of many Young Artist competitions in the US, Gary Schocker has gained reputation as a versatile performer, able to fill in, if necessary, even Jean-Pierre Rampal when he had to perform W.A. Mozart concerto with the New Jersey Symphony Orchestra on a short notice.
Even though he regularly appears as a soloist or chamber musician throughout the world, he has proven to be a prolific composer. He has written music for almost every orchestral instrument and received multiple recognitions from the National Flute Association, winning twice the annual Newly Published Music Award.
Gary Schocker has recorded 8 CDs as a soloist with versatile repertoire and additional recordings with his recital companions Emily Mitchell (harp) and Jason Vieaux (guitar).
Gary Schocker teaches at the New York University and in his private studios in New York and Easton, Pennsylvania.
