Gary Schocker: Sonata No. 6 for Flute and Piano, "La Salmonella" was written in 2005 and published in 2006 by the Theodore Presser Company. This is one of Gary Schocker’s most eccentric and technically brilliant works, notorious for its humor and the unusual circumstances of its creation.
The title is not a musical term but a literal reference to a severe case of food poisoning Schocker suffered in 2005. According to Theodore Presser’s program notes, Schocker was scheduled to write a piece but was bedridden by the bacteria. As he began to recover, he channeled his physical state into the music. Each movement depicts a stage of the illness. "Sick" features dizzying, chromatic lines; "Weak" is a frail, fragile, slow movement; and "Recovered" is a frantic, celebratory burst of health.
2005 followed the high-stress professional production of his musical "Far From the Madding Crowd". This sonata reflects a return to "absolute" flute music, but through the lens of theatrical comedy.
By 2005, Schocker was secure enough in his reputation that he could release a work with a "gross" or "unpleasant" title. It solidified his image as the "enfant terrible" of the flute world: someone who could combine rigorous academic form with irreverent subject matter.

Gary Schocker (1959) is an American flutist, pianist, harpist, composer and teacher.
Born in Pennsylvania, he started to play flute at the age of 10 and 5 years later he debuted as a soloist with the Philadelphia Orchestra and the New York Philharmonic, becoming acclaimed performer before attending the Julliard School.
Laureate of many Young Artist competitions in the US, Gary Schocker has gained reputation as a versatile performer, able to fill in, if necessary, even Jean-Pierre Rampal when he had to perform W.A. Mozart concerto with the New Jersey Symphony Orchestra on a short notice.
Even though he regularly appears as a soloist or chamber musician throughout the world, he has proven to be a prolific composer. He has written music for almost every orchestral instrument and received multiple recognitions from the National Flute Association, winning twice the annual Newly Published Music Award.
Gary Schocker has recorded 8 CDs as a soloist with versatile repertoire and additional recordings with his recital companions Emily Mitchell (harp) and Jason Vieaux (guitar).
Gary Schocker teaches at the New York University and in his private studios in New York and Easton, Pennsylvania.
