Gary Schocker: "Winter Jasmine" for flute and piano was written in 2011. The work was commissioned by David and Dale Straubinger. It was written to celebrate Jasmine Choi's new 14K gold flute, handmade by David Straubinger. The title "Winter Jasmine" is a direct, poetic nod to the dedicatee's name. It was premiered by Jasmine Choi following its 2012 publication. During the time of this commission, Gary Schocker was moving into a period of significant international collaboration. While he maintained his "Birthday Sonata" tradition for family, he was increasingly writing "bespoke" works for global soloists like Jasmine Choi (who was named Principal Flutist of the Vienna Symphony in 2012) and Sir James Galway.
The title and story behind "Winter Jasmine" are deeply rooted in Gary Schocker's admiration for the resilient spirit of the plant and his personal connection to Jasmine Choi. Jasmine Choi describes the flower as one that "blooms with difficulty only in winter". This serves as a metaphor for the strength and beauty of her artistry. Schocker describes the piece's character as evocative of the flower’s "intensely-perfumed" nature, noting that "there is sweetness here in the sadness which this music evokes".
Gary Schocker (1959) is an American flutist, pianist, harpist, composer and teacher.
Born in Pennsylvania, he started to play flute at the age of 10 and 5 years later he debuted as a soloist with the Philadelphia Orchestra and the New York Philharmonic, becoming acclaimed performer before attending the Julliard School.
Laureate of many Young Artist competitions in the US, Gary Schocker has gained reputation as a versatile performer, able to fill in, if necessary, even Jean-Pierre Rampal when he had to perform W.A. Mozart concerto with the New Jersey Symphony Orchestra on a short notice.
Even though he regularly appears as a soloist or chamber musician throughout the world, he has proven to be a prolific composer. He has written music for almost every orchestral instrument and received multiple recognitions from the National Flute Association, winning twice the annual Newly Published Music Award.
Gary Schocker has recorded 8 CDs as a soloist with versatile repertoire and additional recordings with his recital companions Emily Mitchell (harp) and Jason Vieaux (guitar).
Gary Schocker teaches at the New York University and in his private studios in New York and Easton, Pennsylvania.
