Piccolo Sonata No. 4 for piccolo and piano
Matt Smith: Piccolo Sonata No. 4 for piccolo and piano was written in 2014.
This sonata was written with a specific pedagogical purpose: to serve as an introductory piece for flutists who are new to playing the piccolo.
Much of the melodic material is intentionally based on scales and arpeggios and moves in a stepwise fashion to help new players develop essential control over the instrument's challenging intonation and high register.
Around 2014, the English composer and flutist Matt Smith was an established creator of educational music. His works had been performed internationally and included in examination syllabuses for over a decade. This sonata fits into his broader commitment to creating accessible and engaging music for players of all levels.
