"All Alone at Last" for solo flute
R. Woolf: " All Alone at Last" for solo flute was written in 2017 and dedicated to flutist Ransom Wilson.
"Ransom Wilson, flute player and conductor, has been a friend of mine and to my music since 2003, when he conducted my work Modern Primitive with the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center. His first reaction was to tell me he thought the piece was the result of way too much coffee—but I eventually managed to convince him otherwise.
Since then, Ransom has been extraordinarily generous. He has conducted my orchestral and chamber works, performed my music, commissioned me, recorded my pieces, and helped me in more ways than I can count. He introduced me to Greg Pattillo and asked me to write a concerto for him, which became Native Tongues.
I always wanted to write Ransom a solo piece because he is, quite simply, a remarkable flute player. I titled the piece All Alone at Last because I finally had him – his sound, his artistry – completely unalloyed.
Thank you, Ransom, for the incredible performance on this recording, for your friendship, and everything else."
Randall Woolf (1959) is an American composer who studied composition privately with David Del Tredici, Joseph Maneri, and at Harvard, where he earned a Ph.D. He was Composer/Mentor for the Brooklyn Philharmonic. He composed a new ballet of "Where the Wild Things Are", in collaboration with Maurice Sendak and Septime Webre. He works frequently with John Cale. He collaborated with him on the music to the film "American Psycho", and has arranged over 60 of Cale's songs for chamber orchestra, including the entire "Paris 1919" album,"Music For A New Society", and songs from "The Velvet Underground And Nico". His works have been performed by Kathleen Supové, Jennifer Choi, Timothy Fain, Todd Reynolds, ETHEL, Ransom Wilson, Tara O'Connor, Lindsey Goodman, the Brooklyn Philharmonic, Kronos Quartet, Bang On A Can, Fulcrum Point, American Composers Orchestra, NakedEye Ensemble, Seattle Symphony, Louisville Orchestra, West Michigan Symphony, Chicago Philharmonic and others.
