Chase, Claire

Chase, Claire

Claire Chase is an influential American flutist, interdisciplinary artist, and educator, recognized as a fierce advocate for new and experimental music. She is celebrated for her innovative approach to performance and for significantly expanding the contemporary repertoire for her instrument.
Claire studied at the Oberlin Conservatory of Music in Ohio, where she co-founded the International Contemporary Ensemble. She served as artistic director for 16 seasons, overseeing over 1,000 premieres of new works.
In 2013, she initiated the "Density 2036" project, a 24-year project to commission new solo flute repertoire, culminating in a 2036 marathon performance of the commissioned pieces.
Chase is the first flutist to receive a MacArthur Fellowship (2012) and an Avery Fisher Prize (2017). She also holds honorary doctorates from the Curtis Institute of Music and the Cleveland Institute of Music.
Chase is a Professor of the Practice at Harvard University and a Creative Associate at The Juilliard School, where she teaches contemporary music and collaborative practices.
