Remarkable flutists
Roswitha Staege is a distinguished German flutist and pedagogue, recognized for her mastery of contemporary music and her influential leadership within the Berlin musical community.
Born in Ludwigshafen am Rhein, Germany, she studied with some of the most prominent flutists of the 20th century, including Jean-Pierre Rampal in Paris and Sir James Galway. A pivotal influence on her artistic development was her study with Aurèle Nicolet, which instilled in her the technical precision and analytical depth that define the German-French flute tradition.
Staege gained international renown as an advocate for 20th and 21st-century music. She has premiered numerous works dedicated to her by major composers, including Isang Yun, Aribert Reimann, and Helmut Lachenmann.
She has performed as a soloist with world-class orchestras, including the Berlin Philharmonic, the Symphonieorchester des Bayerischen Rundfunks, and the London Symphony Orchestra, working under conductors such as Claudio Abbado and Sir Simon Rattle.
She is Professor Emerita at the Berlin University of the Arts, where she taught for several decades.
