Dowdall, William

Dowdall, William

William Dowdall is one of Ireland's most prominent flutists, widely recognized for his work as a soloist, orchestral leader, and teacher.
Born in Dublin, Ireland, he moved to the United States to study flute with Maurice Sharp, the principal flutist of the Cleveland Orchestra. His interest in contemporary music was sparked during his time at the Cleveland Institute of Music by composer-in-residence Donald Erb.
Upon returning to Ireland at age 21, he was appointed principal flute of the RTÉ Concert Orchestra. He later served for 25 years (1979–2004) as the Principal Flute of the RTÉ National Symphony Orchestra of Ireland.
He is a major proponent of contemporary Irish music, having premiered over 50 solo works commissioned for or dedicated to him by Irish composers.
He has recorded for labels such as Naxos, Celestial Harmonies, and Atoll Records.
