Martin, Marya

Marya Martin is a world-renowned New Zealand-born flutist, educator, and artistic leader based in New York City.
Born in Auckland, New Zealand, Martin began her musical studies in her home country before moving abroad to pursue an international career. She studied with some of the most influential flutists of the 20th century, including Jean-Pierre Rampal in Paris and Sir James Galway.
She earned her Master’s degree from the Yale School of Music, where she studied under Thomas Nyfenger.
In 1984, Martin founded the Bridgehampton Chamber Music Festival (now Bridgehampton Chamber Music) on Long Island.
She has performed as a soloist with many orchestras, including the London Philharmonic, the National Symphony, and the New Jersey Symphony. She has premiered over 50 compositions by major American composers such as Ned Rorem, Kenji Bunch, and Kevin Puts.
Since 1996, she has been a faculty member of the Manhattan School of Music.
