Remarkable flutists
Paula Robison is one of the most acclaimed American flutists. Born in Tennessee, she studied flute with Roger Stevens in Los Angeles, with Julius Baker at Julliard School in New York and with Marcel Moyse at the Marlboro Music School and Festival.
In 1964 she won the 2nd prize at ARD competition and won Geneve competition in 1966, becoming the first American who achieved this. Afterwards her career took off with frequent performances at Carnegie Hall and other concert venues around the world.
Paula Robison has commissioned works for flute and orchestra to Leon Kirchner, Toru Takemitsu, Oliver Knussen, Robert Beaser, and Kenneth Frazelle, as well as premiered music by Lowell Liebermann, Michael Tilson Thomas, Pierre Boulez, Alberto Ginastera, Elliott Carter, Keith Jarrett to name a few.
She has made various notable recordings for Sony and Vanguard labels. In 2006 she founded her own label Pergola recordings. Paula Robison has taught at the Juilliard School and given masterclasses all over the world. Currently she teaches at New England Conservatory.
